Tagging
By adding tags to devnet content you can help other users to find informations thematically close to their needs, thats why you get points for tagging. Tagging is enabled for forum posts, FAQ entries, static pages and wiki pages.
Here is a list of the Tags currently used [developer.qt.nokia.com]
Untagging is activated for “Hobby Entomologist” or higher ranks.
Merging tags is not yet implemented [developer.qt.nokia.com] for the front end. Merging of tags can be done by Admins.
General guidelines for tagging:
- Avoid plurals, prefer singulars in all reasonable cases
- Example: tag with “nokia phone” not “nokia phones”
- Tags support space, so no need to drop them
- Example: tag with “qt creator” not “qtcreator”
- Use meaningful tags
- Example: don’t tag with “qt” – this is a Qt site
- Content not in English should be tagged with “language:code”
- Example: language:ru, language:es, language:de etc.
- Don’t duplicate existing tags by using a synonym of it (merging will solve)
- Example: “visual studio”, “msvs”, “msvc”
- Content related to bug entries is sometimes tagged following a special pattern
- Example: qtwebsite-70 [developer.qt.nokia.com]
Tags that will be removed if set:
- “faq” – in the FAQ section
- “wiki” – on the wiki
- “devnet” – due to limited value and over-tagging
- “beta” – if you want to tag something beta you have to add version number
Candidates:
- “question” – unsure of value, tagged a lot
- “please rename” – for the wiki, but no naming convention yet to support its use

Should there be a kind of auto-tagging? Aliases? Search operators?
Please see feature requests collected under:

Is there a need for stricter guidelines?
The top half of this wiki page should eventually evolve into a comprehensive set of guidelines. (MariusG)
How and when to merge similar tags?

Does “sub-tagging” make sense?
Here an short example inspired from QtK [developer.qt.nokia.com] in the forum:
Contents related to Project Elf [developer.qt.nokia.com] can be tagged with combinations of tags made from the words “elf” and “project”. It seems that some combinations are better then others:
- “elf, project” – ok
- “project, project elf” – ok
- “elf, project elf” – not so good
- “elf, project, project elf” – not so good
Since “elf” will probably keep only a synonyme for project elf, on of the alternatives “elf” and “project elf” will be sufficient. When the tag “project” isn’t added the contents will not be listed with other project pages.
