Notifications on Symbian

Is there an API for issuing some kind of notification/alarm on Symbian platforms? For example, consider writing a simple email or IM client in Qt which keeps running in the background and gives an alert when a new message is received. Alerts may be of various varieties: flashing LEDs, vibration, sound, some app-specific notification icon etc. Is such a functionality available? If not, any plans for such?

Hello Rahul,

Did you notice the Service Framework API [developer.qt.nokia.com] in the Qt Mobility 1.1.0-tp? I haven’t had the opportunity to full investigate it but it may be worth your consideration.

Well, the API looks to be an API to discover and use “services” present on the device but not sure if there are any default services and whether a notification service is available.

I found that there is libnotify on Maemo (and not part of Qt but can be easily used within Qt apps) but not sure if there is anything similar on Symbian and whether it is exposed as a Qt API.

Notifications on Meego appear to be handled by libmeegotouch, so as far as I can see notifications are still platform-specific and not available as part of Qt.

Hello Rahul,

Symbian has many servers. One is the messaging server [developer.symbian.org]. Here [developer.symbian.org] is an example of how to handle incoming text messages.
