Rating forum topics

I am wondering what the use of rating forum topics is. To me, it seems many people only rate up topics because they can easily score points with that. That means that topics that don’t contain any useful info will still get rated up, thus making the whole rating loose much of its value. For instance, this [developer.qt.nokia.com] topic so far contains little value, as the actual question is so far still unclear. Still, four people already rated the topic up. Why?

I think that perhaps it is time to evaluate the workings of the ratings. Perhaps no points should be awarded for rating a topic, or you should be able to rate a topic no only with “good”, but also with “average” or “poor”. I think the current way, scores are artificially inflated.

I had raised similar [developer.qt.nokia.com] concerns sometime back.

Good point.
Can someone please close this thread to keep the discussion in one place?
