Qt local groups

Just a thought. Is there such a thing? Is there a Toronto chapter for QT people, that also admit hobbiest? It does not have to be large. If I’m the only one in Toronto, we can make it Ontario, the province. Canada is too large to meet for coffee on a Saturday morning.

Any ideas? I got this idea from MSDN .net groups. I love computers, but at times it helps to simply talk, or listen. :)

Makes sense to have such a thing. Maybe a start can be made when the groups functionality here becomes available. You can then always end up in meetings.

Thanks, Franzk. That’s a good start. I think QT Creator with QT SDK is a winner. There will be more people using it and I’ll keep my eyes and ears open. Meanwhile, I just tinker away. :D

Not long now, a few weeks perhaps. Testing of the Groups module is underway. :)

How about a screenshot of a group home page?

http://developer.qt.nokia.com/uploads/image_upload/groups_testing.png [developer.qt.nokia.com]

Guide to tabs:

Activity – the combined stream of activities in a group (wiki edits, forum posts, member changes, updates, possibly an external RSS feed)
Updates – twitter-like update channel for the group
Forum – each group can have a forum connected to it, posts shown here
Wiki – your groups wiki lives here, if you want one
Members – the member list, and some member management
Settings – depending on who you are (founder, admin, member) you get some options to tailor the group there

That is a quick introduction, we expect to have it our for bashing and breaking in about 16 days if our plan holds. It’s not every feature known to man when it comes to grouping but we believe we have found a good feature set without reinventing the wheel too much. In a few months it might have grown a feature or two, it all depends on your feedback.

We want this to fit perfectly for making and organizing local Qt groups, projects, interest groups etc.

Let me know if you have any immediate worries :)

Alexandra will reevaluate the requirements soon. Also I think we’re holding the door open for group creators without the required rank if actions elsewhere (like gitorious.org contributors, Forum Nokia Champs etc.) makes it logical to do so.

Glad you like it :)

I think its a really good idea to invite git contributors, forum nokia champs to create groups :)

Obviously I agree with all of the above :D

Just a thought: the QT Creator has also an embedded Mercurial feature, maybe those developers can lead as well? :)

hi marius,

is there a groups overview page where one could see the list of available groups, search for groups based on say tags or interest area (description) … etc

if a group is associated with its own specific forum, what kind of access are we talking about here? will posts to this forum be available to other users? will the global rss feed have these entries …

questions questions and questions :P pardon my curiosity :D

The page that hides under “GROUPS” in the top meny (in gray) has a list of groups, and options to see them per category – but not tag yet. In addition to a list of users and easy access to member search. The page in the screenshot is the page you get to when you click on a group.

The forums are like normal forums, there is no separate “forum space” for groups. What we do is connect a forum ID to a group ID on request. A forum can be connected to several groups in fact. So it’s not really the groups “own” forum, but rather a forum that is connected to the groups stated interest. For example a group called “Qt India” and a group called “Qt Bangalore” might both be connected to a “Qt India” forum. Moderators are then assigned based on that.

More forums, like the “Qt India” above, will be made when it makes sense and we believe there is volume to support it.

There will be human interaction for some of those steps (making a group, adding forum, adding wiki, moderation), it’s a bit of work but it makes sense in the long run. In theory at least :)
