Last week ik received my kit. I urgently teared open the TNT bag and I was overwhelmed with what I discovered : there was a box with a Nokia N9 inside it! I expected the Nokia C7, but got the best looking smartphone I know of.

Of course I started playing with it like any other kid which gets new toys and discoverd some really neat things :

The gps and route planner is really great with speed limit control! and you don’t need 3G access to use it because it tracks the position from the satelites.
Gmail / Exchange agenda combined all in one nice looking agenda, so our family can keep track of each others activities.
This ones I really like : Root access , Use device as an external HD, websites with flash player, tracking your biking tour.

The video quality is really great, but untill now I didn’t succeed in playing high quality Youtube films. I can’t believe that isn’t possible since the default video player is awesome. I discovered some apps on the store that should do the thing.

Speaking of apps. I was amazed about what I discovered on the ovi store. Everything I need is there and even more!

So let’s dig into Meego now, since I developped my first app NumboTime for Symbian, I know what to do next. The Qt meego docs are very atractive. I’ll test it on the N9 and hopefully some good soles on devnet would like to test it on a symbian phone? ;-)

Thank you so much Nokia for this amazing kit, I will wear the shirt with pride. I’m feeling great, I’m happy and I’m having fun …isn’t that what life is all about?

The most frustrating moments in a developers life...

Hello fellow Qt Ambassadors!

You know perhaps the most frustrating moments in a developers life. You spent a lot of your time and love to develop something you are believing in, you put it on the Nokia Store, it is beginning to sell well… 2 items a day, the first fantastic feedback and you feel really proud.

But short after you get a massiv destructive feedback without feeling guilty about it. You can’t see a good explanation for this and the number of sold applications dropped immedially below 1 per week. It just feels unfair. The reasoning for the destructive 1 Star rating is at example: “I don’t like the color”, “I bought it accidentally” or “why can’t it fly” – And you can’t do absolutely noting about it.

I can’t change this situation. But I wan’t to offer us developers with this posting a try to test applications from skilled people for skilled people. So please keep on reading.

First what happened recently to my:
I just got such a frustrating moment for my new released application ClipMan [bitly.com] for Symbian. I got this german rating:

Fast Translation: “I downloaded and paid ClipMan. But there is noting on my C7-00 Belle. Now the store claims the application is not supported by the C7-00. The strange fact, 6 days ago a other rating from a C6-01 Belle user claims it works on his device.
There also ClipMan for PC, but it is not very good compared to superior ClipMate which I use as a database on a usb stick.”

From my point of view it is a very strange rating and includes many untrue facts. I use ClipMan myself on my Nokia C7-00 and I never released ClipMan for the PC. He compares my application with something different and in the end he advise other users to buy a 30€ Windows application called ClipMate instead of my 1,99€ Symbian app. WTF!
I’m in the meantime sure the user used a prepaid card to buy the application and was to impatient to wait until the payment was confirmed. I tested this scenario myself on my C7-00 and bought my own application. I had to wait about 3 minutes until I was finally able to install it. In this 3 minutes the store proclaimed it is not compatible. But after I got the confirmation SMS it installed without any kind of problems. So I guess the user was finally just impatient.
So, I got this massiv destructive rating only because a not very well made purchase process and a problem in the Nokia Store frontend. It is a bug, it should say “wait until the paiment is confirmed” instead of “not compatible with your device.” So, Great! Thanks Nokia!

I contacted the developer support to doublecheck if ClipMan works on the C7-00 with Symbian Belle and asked if they could check if the user batzi7 was finally able to install the application or if he has still problems with it. But without result. They are unable to contact the user, the QA system states clearly it works on Belle and everyone should be able to install it.
I asked to delete in this case the rating because it is untrue, harmful and contains totally untrue content. Especially relating to a never published Windows Version of my App. But also without result. They are “unable to remove ratings” – I’m not able to reply to a rating, to contact a user with problems, I’m unable to provide support, and a once created rating will forever resists even if I fix a bug and update my application… absolutely great! :-(

So, what to do? Compensate it with positive ratings. :)

But the users are lazy, they are mostly writing if they are dissatisfied and if everything works the most simply don’t write a comment. And since this rating appeared the users even stopped to download and test the application.

Because of this I would like to ask now other Qt Ambadassors to test my application. In return I will test your application myself.

If my app works well and you like it please give a good rating. If you see problems please write here first and lets talk about it and how to improve it until it works for you. I will do the same for you.

So, please purchase ClipMan [bitly.com] and post here at this tread the username and nick you used for the rating and the name and link to your own C7-00 application. But please, don’t release now a 20€ application. It would get to expensive to me, so I hope it will still be about 1,99€ to keep it fair for everyone.

Let’s try to test if this works. :)

	Happy developing,
helex

I became a Qt Ambassador :) , and after a few days i was given a tracking number. But TNT stole the phone !! :( and damaged the rest of the contents. TNT people replaced the phone with a cheap ($20USD) Mexican Movistar phone!!.

Luckily I found about it quickly, the package looked suspicious so i opened it before signing, found about the inccident and I rejected the package. It was sent back to Oslo.

I’ve send a few emails to Marianne but got no answer. I was left with nothing, not even the stickers! :(

I offered Marianne to file a claim to TNT Mexico if that would help.

I am willing to pay for the re-sending of the package if possible. I dont know if i am still eligible to receive a badge, this is sad because TNT Mexico has a very bad rep for stealing customer goods, late delivery and bad customer service.

Im very dissapointed at TNT and sad at this issue. Now the tracking number 905667184 is not even available anymore.

Is there anyone here with a similar story? :(

Do you think there’s still a chance to get a badge, or at least a poster or stickers :) ?

Hi there!

I received an email on 1 November 2011 stating that my project had been accepted into the Qt Ambassador program. On the same day, I filled in the required information along with the requisite screenshots and submitted the project for approval.

On 8 January 2012, I requested access to the unpublished project as I had to update screenshots and some of the information and I was informed that the project had been unlocked shortly after.

I’ve subsequently updated the information and since there was no “Submit for Approval” button after the unlock (I tried Firefox, IE and Chrome to make sure it wasn’t a browser bug), I sent an email to Marianne informing her that I’ve made the changes I wanted to and that she could relock (resubmit?) the project.

I haven’t heard anything since though and would like to know if anyone can give me an estimate of when I can expect feedback (please contact me if you can help and I’ll provide you with the project specifics in an email or PM, whichever you prefer).

Thanks and have a great day! :)

Qt, Qt Quick and N950

Hi folks,

I’m trying to write something for my N950 but I’m stuck with some things:

	1) If I try to write my UI using Qt Quick, the Qt Creator’s designer is not showing me some widgets. In order to test see the correct results, I must run the application in N950.

This is the screenshot of Qt Creator [img202.imageshack.us] (big, so I preferred to put a link) and this is the application running in N950:

So my question is: is anybody here using Qt Creator’s designer to draw Qt Quick screens for N950, or just writing its source code and testing? It’s looking confusing for me to design screens with it.

	2) I tried to write some code in Qt and C++ and run in N950, but it showed me weird Windows-like widgets. The second question is: can’t I run applications written fully in Qt and C++ looking with MeeGo’s native widgets?

[Update: I just discovered libmeegotouch [harmattan-dev.nokia.com] – ignore this question! :)]
