Why do I have to register?
For various reasons. First, we think it’s nice to know something about the person who edits a wiki or participates in the forums. And we would like to give credit to those who stand out from the crowd with their contributions to the network.
What are you doing with my data?
How do I control who may send me messages?
Go to Edit Email Settings on your profile setting page. There you can check or un-check all the boxes you see to adjust the options to your needs. Please note that we will need to contact you via email in rare exceptional cases although you may have set your preferences to not receive emails from site administrators.
What is the whole ranking system about?
Actually, it’s quite straight forward. You do something on the Network, you get points. When you reached a certain amount of points, you level up. It’s a measure of your activity, not quality. Points that are older than 12 months will expire. Head this way to find out all about points and user levels.
When will you implement my favourite feature?
How comes you’re so obsessed with buns?
Wednesday was web consultant day, which also turned into buns day. After 6 hours of intense work on UX, design, concepting and a lot of talking everybody was in desperate need of a break… and sugar! Enter the bakery run. As the network progressed, work increased and so did the need for buns. We try to keep a maximum of two runs per week…
Why do we need yet another network?
In 2009 we looked at the sites we were maintaining on the web and concluded that it was a mess. Marius sat down and made stunning mind maps of wild concepts that left us with round eyes. The Developer Network is one of the results: we took what we already had on various sites and moved it into one platform. We want to keep it open for participation because we believe in the superiority of joint efforts.
What system are you using?
The whole platform is running on ExpressionEngine.
How can I format my pages?
The system uses Textile as a formatting language. You can find all the formatting options in the wiki. To make yourself familiar with the details you could also check out this neat website that turns Textile into HTML.
Are there any special rules?
Glad you asked. When you registered you had to accept our Terms of Usage, remember? In there you will find all - and we mean ALL - that you need to know about the hows and whens and whys. Most of us however don’t particularly like reading all-caps legal text. Therefore we came up with human readable rules for the forum and the wiki. They are based on common sense and boil down to “behave nicely!” and “don’t paste code here!”.
How do I insert images if I am not allowed to upload any?
Unfortunately, we cannot host images on our servers that we haven’t uploaded ourselves. If you need images as part of your content you can upload them to one of the many free imagehosting sites out there and embed them into your content or link to the image site. We do not recommend hosting the image yourself, the traffic may max out your credit card…
