Badges - First Steps on the Way to Real Reputation

by Alexandra in Qt DevNet News (6259 views)

Finally, it has arrived: our very own set of badges. Call it beta.

It’s there. Those of you paying close attention (Chetan, I’m looking at you!) probably remember that we have been working on this functionality for a while. We had manually assigned TROLL and certification badges but we wanted to add more and the system didn’t really cut it. Particularly, when it came to adding new badges e.g. for Ambassadors [qt.nokia.com] or the new certification level. [qt.nokia.com] So we decided to go the whole way and develop a badge framework.

The badge you can find on this page [developer.qt.nokia.com] are part of our very first set. We have more in the pipeline and will continue to add them bit by bit. There will be badges for special programs like Project Elf [developer.qt.nokia.com] or the Babel fish program [developer.qt.nokia.com] or events like DevDays [qt.nokia.com] and the Qt Contributors’ Summit [developer.qt.nokia.com] as well as badges related to documentation, answers on the forums and wiki contributions.

There are still some things missing like the integration with the profile box on the front page or the fully fledged reputation system (think “Thank this user”-functionality) but we thought we’d release the framework anyway.

The automated badges should all be assigned already, the manual ones need some attention by yours truly. You can set your favorite two for display in the forums in your profile settings. All your badges are displayed on your profile page.

And now, take a look at it and let us know what you think in the comments.

Hi Trolls,

Thanks a lot for releasing first (beta :-) ) version of the badge framework. The handling in the profile edit part looks good to me. I’m looking forward to the next coming badges.

While I like the badge system, here’s something I don’t like:

  • The badge graphics. Too big, the font is blurry, and in general they’re too impersonal. I don’t like the writings in them. They eat too much space in the forums, and you can only show two of them (three if you include your “ranking”). How about a contest for a total redesign of the badges/ranking thing?
  • The fact that they may privilege spamming (starting many threads, or joining many groups)
  • The fact that you can lose them over time (like, starting X threads in the last Y weeks is nonsense to me. Once you have an achievement, it should be yours forever.)

My suggestion to second point: make thread creation badges and such only get applied after thread has gotten X amount point or similar. For groups, maybe user needs to contribute to it somehow? Just joining in is pretty easy :)

@peppe: for your #1 point, we will do another effort to make the badges crisp and no wider than necessary. We have kept most in a light gray shade so they don’t drown out other content. That is also the reason we have the limit of two to show outside the profile. If anyone has a good idea for badge design I’d love to see it :)

Interesting idea, how about some bug tracker related badges?

Or wiki related badges. I know it’s hard to track but those guys in the wiki do the most work I think :)

Badges have been changed a bit, they are smaller, the font is easier to read (no fake Photoshop bold) and the background is a tad lighter on the gray ones. Qt Ambassador was made black to stand out more, because Qt Ambassadors are awesome.

As with any taste-based development my hope is to make 80% of you happy :)
